When the mainland had first presented the experiment to combat the impending environmental crisis, there was talk of ethics and morals but when facing the death of a planet, it is easy for certain groups of people to become dispensable. The scientists started with the sick ones and worked their way through the criminals all the way to the homeless. They built the five hubs at the center of the mainland as if it were some zoo to be ogled at by passersby. Beyond the thick smog that filled the half domes, the air outside was clean and filtered by the money paid for the success of the experiment. With all of those considered part of the problem locked away inside of the hubs, it was as if a cloud had been lifted. Suddenly it wasn’t so hard for people to care about the planet. With the introduction of the clean chip, crime rates went down and the mainland became an oasis. The success of the chip brought in new leadership and a new way of life and suddenly it was easy to forget that this newfound paradise was possible because of a price that was being paid by the select few that were deemed disposable. Those who lived on the outside comforted themselves with the idea that sometimes for the greater good sacrifices had to be made.
